Want to go for a bike ride with me in Singapore? Well, imagine you are dressed in your absolute lightest clothing, and lets pedal onto the “Punggol Park Connector”! A love of food is something shared between Singapore and Portland - and not just the food itself but the entire experience of finding it, experimenting with it, and eating it. Food carts took Portland by storm starting in the late 1990s - but Singapore has a much longer history of "street hawkers". On a recent visit to the National Museum (www.nationalmuseum.sg) I discovered a few facts:
It takes about 24 hours of travel time to go from Portland, Oregon to Singapore. I took the short 45-minute flight to Seattle, then 10 hours to Narita (Tokyo), and finally another 7 hours to "the Little Red Dot" (Singapore). You cross the International Date Line, and end up in a place that is 15 hours ahead of the Pacific Time Zone. My irregularly shaped room at the boutique Hotel 1929 in Chinatown served as home base for my first 3 weeks. Don't let the mirrors fool you - the room is small by US standards. There isn't a wardrobe/closet or a desk - just a shelf. The bed may only be entered at one end. Oh yeah, you can poop in the shower (there is a toilet in there). ;-)
